Interview up

Hey there,

Someone sent me some questions which I answered as honestly as possible.

Here it is:

Interview with Ewan Dobson

Open Mic in Barrington, NJ has absurd terminology… illogical

Ok check this out.

I went to the Barrington Coffee House in Barrington, NJ last week to check out their open mic. It was recommended to me by some fellow I met at another open mic in another town. It was advertised on the website as being a 7:30pm SIGN UP and an 8pm start. However, when I arrived at 7:15pm there were already 16 people on the list. With 16 people on the list, this puts me somewhere close to or after midnight. It turns out that there is a “PRE SIGN UP” at 6pm. OK, let’s get this straight: There is a 7:30 sign up, but if you want to get ahead of others you can sign up at 6pm AND if enough people sign up at 6pm then it basically renders the 7:30pm sign up useless. So, my question is this.. WHY THE FUCK HAVE A 7:30PM SIGN UP IF 6:00pm IS THE ONLY SIGN UP THAT MATTERS? DUH!!! So, upon seeing 16 people on the list at 7:15pm I went and pissed in their toilet and left. I am not waiting till after midnight in a stank coffee house enduring endless versions of shitty cover songs. I am sorry, it turns out that my previous speech on open mic humility had it’s limitations and I found them.

Let us recap in dummo terms:

OPEN MIC: Hey guys, come to our open mic the sign up is at 7:30pm.

OTHERS: Ok, see you then.

OTHERS arrive at 7:15pm.

OTHERS: Hi, I went to sign up, but the list is full because of an apparent PRE-SIGN UP at 6pm.

OPEN MIC: Oh yeah, sorry… we have a pre-sign up for our preferred cool tree house members who have earned their badge at our clique.

OTHERS: OH, then why advertise a 7:30pm sign up if a pre-sign up nullifies all future sign ins?

OPEN MIC: Well, we don’t think ahead to that level as we are busy tending to our preferred tree house members.

EWAN: Ok, I need to unload some piss into your toilet… then can you show me the way to the door?

So yeah, that is pretty much it. Why the hell would such a redundant nonsensical thing such as a PRE-SIGN UP even exist? GET REAL.. Call it a 6pm sign up and stop the bullshit. A pre-sign up really translates to this, “Sign up starts at 6pm, but if you are later than that you may get a spot but probably won’t.”

So, BROWNTON COFFEE HOUSE just got added to the list of eternal sanchez-moustache.

Featured set at Open Mic in New Jersey. January 17, 2012. 10pm.

Hey there,

I am doing a 45 minute set as a featured act at an open mic in New Jersey. It will be on Tuesday January 17th, 2012 at 10pm.

Tuesday January 17th, 2012.

I’m gonna bring my new 12 string guitar and do a few songs on that as well as the fan-fret guitar made by Delaware luthier Mike Byle.

I am doing this so the fans in New Jersey can get a chance to see me play since my upcoming USA tour does not accommodate them geographically.

Something explained: youtube videos where audience is talking

Hey everyone,

I got this email from someone who appreciates my music and I thought I would share it with you.  His name and email address will remain anonymous.  I have included my reply to it since it explains the situation.

Here it is:

————Begin————-

Hi Ewan,

I don’t usually send emails to total strangers, but your guitar playing is inspirational! and it’s a new year, so what the hell………

Last year! I sent your trance guitar solo to a small group of friends who bar none were utterly blown away by it (rightly so) However, watching utube clips from some of the pubs and venues is much too painful!. I would be delighted to hear you live, I’d pay good money for tickets! …but I could never be present at any of these gigs unless i was armed with a large caliber semi automatic weapon. I’ve never shot anyone before or really thought I would be able to, but I recognize how easy I WOULD unload a clip into the mouths of the people who are talking through your entire gig!!

I’m bewildered by the arrogance of some people.

Your doing what you love, congratulations!

Every success & best wishes with the tour,

Happy new year.

PS From now on, Don’t be afraid to tell people to fuck off if they aren’t there to listen! ..and just incase (coz the world is full of nutters.. only joking about ‘the shooting people in the face stuff’ !!

————–End—————

He has noticed an obvious situation in some of my live youtube videos where people are talking loudly.

Here is my response:

———Begin———–

Hey there ——-,

When I am on tour doing official gigs then people generally don’t talk.  However, some of the videos you are seeing were recorded at open mics.  I do open mics when I am not on tour  so I don’t get rusty or too relaxed.  When I do them I don’t announce where I will go to do an open mic, I just show up.  So, some people may think that people are talking at an official gig.. when it is really just drunk people at a bar.  In this case, the people who like the music pay attention.  I generally don’t give a shit because when I go to a bar open mic, I am doing it for selfish reasons (to practice).  If it is a gig that people pay for, I give it my all and have an easier time focusing because of the silence.  At bars, when people are talking.. they are so in their own drunk world that they keep talking because they can’t hear anything else.
That explains it!
Cheers,
Ewan
——————End———————-
So basically folks, I can’t handle sitting around and not getting out there to play.  My own thoughts and energies drive me totally insane when I am not always on the go.  When I am in between touring and recording I HAVE TO keep playing live to maintain what little bit of sanity I have remaining.  So, the solution is to always be playing open mics when busy touring/recording life comes to a halt.  It gives me a chance to get my energy out and to meet other musicians.  It is also a way to brush up on some social skills which a lot of guitar nerds like myself have long forgotten (basement guitarists, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!).

I would also recommend to guitarists out there not to hesitate in playing open mics.  There are so many brilliant guitarists out there that don’t get out and share their music because they feel the venue or the crowd is “beneath” them.  This mind-frame will surely close you off from sharing what it is that you do.  If you believe you are “too good” then you will surely remain so in your isolation.

Open mics are for your benefit to train yourself as a performer, to keep you humble, to challenge you to keep focus even when people are talking and to get you accustomed to “playing when it’s showtime.”  These are just some of the benefits.  It will also help you to get over “showing off” so you can focus on what you do rather than what others do in response to what you do.  I started doing open mics at the beginning of my career and it was an essential part of my training in terms of overcoming shyness on stage.  I was never naturally comfortable on a stage, I had to work hard to not seize up in front of a crowd.

If a crowd is paying to come see me play then they already are interested in instrumental guitar and will not talk during the show since it is their interest.  At an open mic, I will not always be playing for fans of instrumental guitar since the crowd will be made up of fans of various kinds of music.  The people who like guitar will stop and listen and the people who are not into guitar will keep talking.  This is the reality of the open mic situation.  Some people don’t dig instrumental guitar the way I do, but I don’t give a shit I keep playing through people talking at open mics because I am into what I am doing.  This explains why some youtube videos have a loud crowd in the background.  The chances are it was someone with an IPHONE who captured me randomly at an open mic where I am training.

Too much to say to cover it all, but this is the main idea.

Best,
Ewan

PS:  I never announce when I am attending an open mic because I love participating anonymously.

This is the site I use to search for open mics: http://www.openmikes.org

I have revised this a few times to minimize spelling and grammar errors although some may remain. If you encounter an egregious error of the sort do not hesitate to email me the correction. Thanks!

Also, I have to admit that it is really annoying when people at open mics jump on stage and include themselves without asking. You know, the vegan bongo drummer or the insistent percussionist/guitarist who feels the need to be a part of every single thing that happens on stage. If you want to jam with someone at least have the etiquette to ask to be a part of their set at an open mic. I don’t jump on stage and jam my dick into someone else’s expression. Got me? Here is a quote (not exact, but close): “Projecting the penis into the affairs of others; it’s called ‘fucking with people’” [George Carlin 1937-2008].

Here is a facebook video of my playing a short diddy on the instrument:  http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=318389744861292

Below are some images of me playing the guitar and of the guitar itself.  The images were too high of a resolution to create thumbnails using NEXTGEN gallery plugin so you will need to click on the white boxes that appear to see the pictures one by one.  They are large size pictures so you may need to wait depending on the speed of your internet connection.  I would recommend right-clicking each box and choosing “Save Target As” or “Save Link As” depending on what browser you are using.

A Visit With Jason Becker.

Hello Everyone,

I would like to pass on to you a moment I experienced with one of my all-time favorite guitar players: Jason Becker.  He is a inspiration to all of us in so many ways.  Please read about his life experience and listen to his music.  Check out this video here to get an introduction into his life >>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFjQgDe_a0E&feature=share

Also check out his myspace http://www.myspace.com/jasonelibecker

wikipedia entry  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Becker

and his official website http://www.jasonbeckerguitar.com

I was fortunate enough to have been invited to visit with this incredible man whose music and story has touched so many people around the world.  A day after a gig I played in San Francisco I went over to his place and got to hang with him for a while.  I played some songs for him and got to talk to him.  Enclosed are some pictures for everyone to see.  It was totally awesome to have been able to try out his own personal Carvin and Hurricane guitars.

I would encourage people to consider donating money to his cause as they are trying to raise money to make a documentary about him.  It is a story worth being told to many.
